"Black Diasporo" features work by a variety of artists

September 11 – October 30, 2020 @ Tipton Gallery

JOHNSON CITY, TN — “Black Diaspora: From Africa to Appalachia to Affriachia: Reclaiming History, Memory and Place” is on exhibit in Slocumb Galleries through Sept 11 and until Oct. 30 in Tipton Gallery.

The exhibit features works by LaKisha Blount, Marcella Jane Buis, Sean Gerard Clark, Marie Cochran and Chris Aluca Berry, Jason Flack, Nikky Finney, Lynn Marshall-Linnemeier, Viola Spells, Frank Walker and Sammie Nicely.

It also includes a film showing and virtual Q&A of “Red Summer in Knoxville” and “Expulsion in Erwin” by William Isom III Sept. 9 at 5 p.m. The showing is available on Zoom and Facebook Live.

The project is a partnership between the ETSU Tipton & Slocumb Galleries under the Department of Art & Design, and Student Activities Allocation Committee with The Langston Centre, ETSU Language & Culture Resource Center, Multicultural Center, Film Studies, Radio, TV & Film and Women’s Studies Programs, Toppers Academy, Center for Appalachian Studies, Carver Recreational Center and various youth and senior centers serve intergenerational, and diverse communities of color, as well as various local communities.

The diversity exhibitions are expansion of the Diverse & Empowered Project that received the 2020 Tennessee Association of Museums’ Award of Excellence for Temporary Exhibitions and Award of Commendation for Publication series. Providing activities that promote critical discourse amidst social isolation during the COVID era are essential as safe, open platform to discuss current issues surrounding identity, race, equality, social justice, and empowerment through the arts.
