Johnson City Symphony storytelling event

JOHNSON CITY — Saturday, Nov, 16 at 7:30 p.m., The Johnson City Symphony Orchestra performs“Storytelling,” a musical and literary concert at Milligan College’s Seeger Chapel.

This concert includes a live performance by the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra and features storyteller Megan Wells and narrator Thomas Jenrette in telling classic stories like “Number Nine the Grey,” a gentle interpretation of “The Ugly Duckling” accompanied with music by Copland, Saint-Saens, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky and others.

Wells is an award-winning storyteller and theater artist with a BFA in theater arts from Illinois Wesleyan University and an MFA in directing from Illinois State University. Wells creates the warm intimacy of storytelling with lifelike characters, and she delivers the experience with theatrical timing. Wells performs in museums and symphonies and enhances education for thousands of children, entertains families in festivals and libraries, and helps executives, actors, and storytellers craft powerful stories to effect change.

Wells holds the Circle of Excellence Award from the National Storytelling Network; the Joseph Jefferson Award for Direction; the Education Press, Distinguished Achievement Award; the Parent's Choice GOLD Award; and the Parent's Choice 25 best of 25 years Award.

Narrator Jenrette is emeritus professor of music at East Tennessee State University. He directed the ETSU Choirs, which were awarded numerous accolades during his tenure. Jenrette is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Tennessee American Choral Directors Association and the Marshall Bartholomew Award from the Intercollegiate Men’s Choruses.

Other pieces that will be performed include “Peter and the Wolf,” “Brook Green Suite” and “Ancient Airs and Dances Suite No. 3.”

The event also includes a Good Samaritan Charities’ Thanksgiving Drive. Veterans can attend this concert for free.
