Museum invites artists to submit work for showcase

February 17–21, 2020 @ Southwest Virginia Museum

BIG STONE GAP, VA. — The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park holds its True Art Showcase and Contest for Children from Wednesday, March 4 through Sunday, March 22, celebrating the works of area artists.

True Art, named in honor of James True, the first curator of the museum, features the works of local artists in a show that celebrates the creativity and talents of our friends and neighbors. Works in a variety of mediums are on display throughout the museum from Wednesday, March 4 through Sunday, March 22. Regular admission rates apply. The deadline for submitting art for the showcase is Friday, February 21; due to limited presentation space, limit submissions to four pieces per artist. Participation forms are available from the museum’s front desk on Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The museum is closed January and February.

The showcase also includes a student art competition reflecting this year’s theme, “Landscapes of Southwest Virginia,” open to students in grades K-12. Entries should portray some aspect of Southwest Virginia’s rich culture, history and/or natural surroundings. Drawings and paintings are welcome. The museum requests a maximum size of 11”x17” and welcomes smaller submissions.

All entries should be accompanied by the student’s name, school name and grade. Judges consider entries in the following groupings: Kindergarten through second, third through fifth, sixth through eighth, and ninth through 12th. All submissions should be received at the museum by Friday, Feb. 21. Winning entries are on display in the museum from March 4 until March 22. Winners in each group receive certificates at a reception held at the museum Sunday, March 15 at 2 p.m. in the Victorian Parlor.
