Amy Showers creates crocheted companions

November 24, 2025

Amy Showers, Morristown, Tennessee, creates crocheted creatures and dolls.

“Crocheting is a process that machines cannot truly replicate. It starts with a simple slip knot and forming interlocking loops with yarn, ribbon, thread, wire etc. using a single hooked needle,” she says.

She began crocheting at a young age growing up in a rural mountain area in Pennsylvania. Both of her grandmothers crocheted, and she spent weekends escaping her brothers at her grandmother’s house. She can create in a variety of fiber arts such as embroidery, cross stitch, but crocheting is her favorite. She started by making dishcloths more than 40 years ago.

“I get a lot of inspiration from pop culture, geekdom, guests at shows I attend. I tend to like a little of everything, and this is reflected in the variety of items I make,” she says. For instance, she offers dolls, creatures from movies and television (such as Dr. Seuss characters, aliens and more), animals and jewelry.

She exhibits at local festivals, craft shows and ComiCons. She also sells through Etsy and plans to expand that offering.

She came to A Work of Art Gallery and Gifts through the efforts of Teresa Kath.

“I was set up at Jonesborough Days in 2025 over the Fourth of July weekend. Teresa bought a few earrings and asked if I exhibit in a store anywhere but specifically Bristol. I half-jokingly said if you find me a place I will. Well, I was in the gallery by mid-August. I love that it is a co-op and by working one day a month they can keep rent low and affordable to the artists,” she says.

She generally does not use a pattern but occasionally uses some from Craft Intentions. Her aunt and a good friend also crochet, and their creations are sold through Showers’ booth.

She is a pharmacist and a single mom. “I picked my crochet hook back up about 10 years ago after many years off, mostly to relieve stress. In June, I walked away from a pharmacy I had worked in for 10 years, unsure of what I was going to do next. Teresa came at the right time. She is so encouraging and sweet — her timing was perfect.
