Arts Array begins spring film series

Virginia Highlands Community College’s Spring Arts Array Film Series begins. Show times are Monday and Tuesday evenings at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Abingdon Cinemall. Admission is free for all students and staff members of Virginia Highlands Community College, Emory & Henry College, King University, East Tennessee State University and Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, including participants in the College of Older Adults who purchase an Arts Array pass. Community admission is $7.75.

“The Peanut Butter Falcon” is on screen Feb. 3 and 4. Zak runs away from his care home to make his dream of becoming a wrestler come true. The film stars Shia LaBeouf, Dakota Johnson and Zack Gottsagen.

“If Beale Street Could Talk” is shown Feb. 10 and 11. A young woman embraces her pregnancy while she and her family set out to prove her childhood friend and lover innocent of a crime he didn’t commit. Based on a book by James Baldwin, it stars KiKi Layne, Stephan James and Regina King.

“Joker” is on screen Feb. 23 and 24. In Gotham City, mentally troubled comedian Arthur Fleck is disregarded and mistreated by society. He then embarks on a downward spiral of revolution and bloody crime. This path brings him face-to-face with his alter-ego, “The Joker.” The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro and Zazie Beetz.

Other films in the series include “The Big Short,” “Vice,” “Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont,” “Winter’s Bone,” “RBG,” “Love, Simon,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Bombshell: The Hedy Lamar Story.”
