Arts Array presents three November concerts

October 24, 2022

The Arts Array, a Virginia Highlands Community College-sponsored series of films, concerts, theater plays, art events, lectures and more, presents three concerts during November.

Jazz: America’s Music is held Saturday, Nov. 5 at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church, Abingdon, Va., at 1:30 p.m.

Jazz: America’s Music is a recital demonstrating all styles of jazz in chronological order. You’ll hear styles including Dixieland, African-inspired works, big band swing, bebop, cool jazz, Latin, and fusion, performed by a collection of professional musicians. Composers include Gershwin, Hancock, Gillespie and Strayhorn.

This popular exciting concert is led by Dr. Joseph Trivette, pianist. Trivette is the holder of the Albert Endowed Chair of Music at Southwest Virginia Community College. His various ensembles have achieved outstanding local and national acclaim. Students admitted free, $10 for the public.

“This concert would be great to bring middle and high school band students too also,” says Mary Munsey, Arts Array coordinator.

John Bullard, classical banjoist and Markus Compton, pianist, performs Nov. 13 at 3 p.m. at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church, Abingdon, Va.

Over the course of his performing and recording career, Bullard has invited audiences to share in a transformative revelation: to experience the artistic marriage of banjo and classical music.

As a classically trained musician and the first graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s department of music to earn a degree in performance with the banjo, Bullard has established a critically praised performing and recording career dedicated to exploring the artistic marriage of banjo and classical music. Bullard understands that accepting the banjo — a “folk” instrument with a complex pedigree — into the classical fold is a challenging proposition for traditionalists; the guitar once had to navigate a similar journey to mainstream acceptance. Students admitted free, $10 for the public.

The VHCC Women’s Chorus performs Saturday, Nov. 26 at 1 p.m. at The Arts Depot, Abingdon, Va.

The VHCC Women’s Chorus performs a variety of Christmas music. This group is comprised of students, faculty, staff, high school and community members. It is open to all women who like to sing. Enjoy the art displays and refreshments while you are listening to the sounds. This event is free.

The group is directed by Mary Munsey and accompanied by Krystal Smith on piano and Schery Collins on flute.
