Arts Commission awards $92,746 in Teacher Incentive Grants

RICHMOND, Va. -- The Virginia Commission for the Arts awarded $92,746 in TeacherIncentive Grants www.arts.virginia.gov/grants/strengthening/teacher_incentive.html to 322 teachers throughout Virginia. These grants help teachers develop creative projectswhich link the arts with non-arts learning objectives.

The projects will take place between Jan. 1, 2008, and June 30, 2008.Elementary or secondary classroom teachers currently employed by aVirginia educational institution (PK-12) were eligible to apply. Astatewide panel selected the funded applications on the basis of theircreativity, innovation, and how the arts activity or art form wouldsupport Virginia's non-arts Standards of Learning objectives.

Each year the Teacher Incentive Grant Program provides limited financialassistance of up to $300 to individual elementary or secondary teachersto underwrite arts resources or programming for the classroom, to hirearts consultants or professional artists for creative short-termclassroom arts activities, or to purchase materials for an innovative
classroom arts project. Projects link architecture, creative writing(fiction/poetry), dance, folk arts, music, theatre, visual art,film/video, or a combination of arts disciplines with learningobjectives in mathematics, science, social studies, and English/languagearts.

The next deadline is Oct. 15, 2008.

The Virginia Commission for the Arts is the state agency that supportsthe arts through funding from the Virginia General Assembly and theNational Endowment for the Arts. The Commission distributes grants toartists, arts and other not-for-profit organizations, educationalinstitutions, arts educators, and local governments and providestechnical assistance in arts management.
