The Virginia Highlands Festival, one of the oldest and largest summer festivals in the nation, begins its 69th event in Abingdon, Virginia, Friday, July 28 and ends its 10-day run Sunday, Aug. 6. Details about the more than 100 events can be found on the website www.vahighlandsfestival.org or in "The Highlander" magazine, which can be found throughout the region.

Responding to the sentiments of the Abingdon community, the Juried Arts and Crafts Show returns to the Barter Green. The market opens at 10 a.m., Friday, July 28 and runs daily from 10-6 p.m. The show, which features handcrafted items from throughout the country, has been named one of the "Best in Virginia" for seven years in a row.

The audience-favorite Antiques Market opens Saturday, July 29 with a special "Early Bird Shopping" event from 8-10 a.m. The event takes place in two large tents adjacent to the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon.

Shoppers can get an early-bird opportunity to shop for antiques and collectibles before the crowd of other shoppers. The ticket price of $20 includes coffee, juice, fruit and pastries. The regular market runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day of the festival. Tickets are $5 at the gate or $15 for the run of the show.
