Barter Actors in Civil War Film

June 24, 2007

When I recently rented a DVD entitled Ambrose Bierce: Civil War Stories (2006), what to my wondering eyes did appear but two familiar faces from the Barter Theatre resident acting company: Nick Piper and Eugene Wolf.

Three of the most popular and controversial Civil War stories by the legendary writer are presented in this collection: "Story Of A Conscience" (starring Piper and Wolf), "One Kind Of Officer" and "An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge."

The collection features epic battle sequences, deeply conflicted drama and the signature "surprise endings" that characterized most of Bierce's short stories. Bierce was known to be brilliant, cantankerous and romantic in all his life's passions, and was revered as one of the top storytellers of the late 19th Century.
