The Crooked Road hosts the Youth Fiddler's ConventionSaturday, April 18, at the Southwest Virginia Cultural Center & Marketplace. Registration begins at 11a.m., with the competition beginning at 12 p.m.Registration remains open until the end of the competition.
This year's event feature a free workshop that will teach young musicians the skills needed to play together as a group and provide the opportunity to practice with other young musicians. The workshop begins at 11 a.m.No prior registration is required.
The competition features over $1,500 in cash prizes for both individual instrumentalists and bands. Categories include Folk Song, Clawhammer Banjo, Bluegrass Banjo, Old-Time Fiddle, Bluegrass Fiddle, Guitar, Mandolin, Dance, Old Time Band and Bluegrass Band. Prizes for individual instrumentalists are firstplace: $75, secondplace: $50, thirdplace: $25. Prizes for bands are first place: $150, secondplace: $100, thirdplace: $75.
The Youth Fiddler's Convention is hosted by The Crooked Road. The Crooked Road serves as Virginia's Heritage Music Trail. The organization's driving trail spans 330 miles, connecting 10 major music venues across the mountains of Southwest Virginia. For the past two decades, The Crooked Road has been a vital asset for cultural tourism and economic development in Southwest Virginia.
