Three years ago, for Artistic Reflections I, members of the Bristol Art Guild created visual art pieces after listening to music that local composers had already written or were writing. The artworks accompanied the compositions during a concert at First Presbyterian, with performances by the church choir and the East Tennessee Children's Choir, as well as various soloists and instrumentalists.
This year, members of the Greater Tri-Cities Area Composers' Consortium viewed an art collection at King College for inspiration.
Artistic Reflections II, a concert/art show, will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, at First Presbyterian Church in Bristol, Tenn.
The Art Collection
In December 2003, Neal and Alice Caldwell presented King College a group of works from their personal art collection. Since that time, the college has continued to receive gifts from the Caldwells, forming an impressive gathering that features some of the world's finest artists. Included works represent an expansive variety of genres and eras, including originals from such masters as Rembrandt, Corot, Turner, Picasso, Dali, Toulouse-Lautrec, Whistler, Marsh, Chagall and Matisse, among others. Now known as the Neal and Alice Caldwell Art Collection at King College, it represents one of the most diverse gatherings in the Southeast.
Composing the Music
A new composition may come complete in a flash of inspiration, or it may take much longer to form. Local composers explain how they created new music for this performance.
