Since June 2007, the ETSU Slocumb Galleries has operated a satellite branch in the Tipton Building in downtown Johnson City.

Since then, says Karlota Contreras-Koterbay, director of Slocumb Galleries, "The Tipton Gallery has significantly contributed to the vitality of the downtown arts community, partnering with other institutions such as Nelson Fine Art Center and the Johnson City Area Arts Council, as well as being part of such activities as the Blue Plum Festival. The Tipton Gallery features local artists and student shows, both high school and college level. Its success has helped establish more arts-related venues such as SR404 Contemporary Art Gallery, GreenStone Studio & Gallery, and the Root Gallery."

She concludes, "Our strategic location downtown strengthens our aim for the arts to be a strong voice in advancing economic vitality and cultural development. Our mission is to provide venues and access to contemporary art within the region through innovative and diverse exhibitions that promote artistic excellence, cultural awareness and creative thinking."
