Knoxville Woman Enters Quilt Hall of Fame

August 11, 2009

KNOXVILLE, TN -- Merikay Waldvogel of Knoxville has been inducted into the Quilters Hall of Fame in Marion, Ind. She is the 39th person to be given the honor.

Recognized as a leader in quilt history revival, she has served on the boards of both the American Quilt Study Group and the Alliance for American Quilts. Her books include the 2008 Childhood Treasures: Quilts By and For Children and Soft Covers for Hard times: Quiltmaking and the Great Depression.

Waldvogel and Bets Ramsey, another Quilt Hall of Fame honoree, directed a 1983 Quilts of Tennessee project that documented various quilts in the state. That led to the book, Quilts of Tennessee: Images of Domestic Life to 1930 and an exhibit of quilts that traveled the state.
