Movies return to Paramount Center for the Arts

June 17, 2025

Movies have returned to the historic Paramount Center for the Artsin downtown Bristol.

The Paramount first opened in February 1931 with a showing of “It Pays to Advertise” and remained a movie theater through the 1980s. After a renovation and redesign as a performing arts center, the theater shifted its focus to live entertainment. With the rapid evolution of film technology, it became increasingly difficult to screen feature-length films.

Now, after many years without a professional projection system, the Paramount has installed a Barco UDX 4K40 laser projector. With 4K UHD resolution and 37,500 lumens of light output, the projector enables high-quality film screenings, as well as graphics and presentations for corporate events.

“The addition of a high-quality projection system is a huge step forward in enabling the theater to continue its mission,” said board president David Grace. “In addition to movies, the projector expands the theater’s capabilities to include live streaming, gaming and other digital presentations.”

The Paramount’s first film screening with the new projector was a Mother’s Day showing of the Disney classic “Brave,” sponsored by Blackbird Bakery. That was followed by a Father’s Day presentation of the Steve Martin comedy “Father of the Bride,” sponsored by Burke, Powers & Harty Insurance. The theater staff continues to develop plans for movie screenings throughout the year.

A unique offering now available is private theater rentals, ideal for family movie nights or corporate events.

Paramount Bristol is a multi-use performing arts center in the heart of downtown, presenting music, dance, comedy, film, theater and family entertainment. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, its lavish interior and iconic marquee are hallmarks of the Art Deco movie palaces built in the 1930s. The Paramount Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, owns and operates the theater. Contributions are tax-deductible.
