Newell Hendershot Watermedia Exhibition Winners Announced

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. -- The winners have been announced for the 4th Annual Newell Hendershot Watermedia Exhibition at Sycamore Shoals Historic Park in Elizabethton. The show will be in place until Aug. 30, 2008.

The Watauga Valley Art League and the Park are hosts for the 2008 exhibition, named for two area watercolorists/art teachers who influenced so many to enjoy the arts. Some of Polly Newell and Carol Hendershot paintings are on loan and are being shown at the exhibit.

STUDENT STIPEND AWARD: The annual Carol Hendershot Watermedia Student Stipend award went to Heidi Christiansen from Elizabethton, Tenn. Heidi has some of her artwork on display with the Exhibit. She is currently studying art in Australia for four months.

Judge Victoria Lenne from Knoxville, Tenn. chose the following winners from a show of 49 beautiful paintings:

• DIFFERENT STROKES AWARD: "Fred" by Joan Clark, Lookout Mountain, Tenn.
• CHEAP JOE's AWARD: "The Mallards at Tucker's Brook" by Janet Quine, Telford
• AWARDS OF MERIT went to: "Petals and Pods" by Joan Clark, Lookout Mountain, Tenn.; "Old and New in Hong Kong" by Karen Foote, Johnson City; "Garlic and Pasta" by Sharon Neuhaus, Johnson City; and "Of Interest to All" by Patsy Kelley Reading, Erwin.
• HONORABLE MENTIONS included: "Daughters of Egypt" by Barbara 'Jake' Carter, Greeneville; "Pompeii Lemon Tree" by Kathy M. Hawk, Kingsport; "Crossing Upper Horse Creek" by Jo Ann W. Lyle, Chuckey; and "Pad Hoppers" by Joyce Samuel, Bristol.

NEVER TOO LATE AWARDS

A new category of prizes called "Never Too Late" awards were sponsored by Chris Newell in honor of her mother, Polly Newell. All artists entered in this part of the exhibit had to be 50 years of age or older and have painted in watercolor for two years or less.

The winners selected by Victoria Lenne included the following:

• FIRST PLACE: "Rocky Fork III" by Deborah Holloway, Jonesborough, Tenn.
• SECOND PLACE: "Journey Through Spring Flowers" by Ruth Crowe
• THIRD PLACE: "Beauties" by Claudia Rutherford, Bristol
• AWARDS OF MERIT went to "Roses" by Bruce Brainard and "Opera Iris" by Patricia Robinson, both of Johnson City
• The PROMISING STUDENT AWARD went to: "Dogwood Flowers" by Mary K. Brown, Erwin, Tenn.
