Virginia Highlands Festival combines fine art and photography shows

The annual Juried Fine Arts Show, competition and sales of the Virginia Highlands Festival has returned to the Arts Depot, Abingdon, Virginia, for 2022.

This year marks the debut of the inclusion of photography (both traditional and digital) in the Fine Arts Competition as a medium on par with painting, drawing, printmaking and other two-dimensional works. Digital works on paper are also being accepted this year.

Intake dates for show submissions are July 16 and 17 from 2-5 p.m. at The Arts Depot.

The juror for this year’s exhibit is Greg Banks, a photo-based artist and instructor at Appalachian State University. He is known for combining iPhone images and historic 19th century processes, as well as gelatin silver printing, painting and digital printing.

This year’s best in show will be awarded $1,000, first place $750, second place $500, third place $250 and the people’s choice $250. Youth awards are first place ($100) second place ($50) third place ($25). Voting for the People’s Choice Award will be conducted by ballot July 22-July 30 concluding at 12 p.m., July 30. People’s Choice Winner will be announced Saturday, July 30 at 5 p.m.
