Young Actors Awarded Scholarships at Barter Theatre

October 28, 2008

Five members of The Barter Players, the young actors company at Barter Theatre, have been awarded scholarships to help fund their training at the historic theatre in Abingdon, Va.

This year's winners include Carrie Smith, the Owen and Ruth Phillips Scholarship; Katie Becker, the Patricia Neal Scholarship; Liz Whittemore, the Richard H. Levin Memorial Scholarship; Robert Kitchens, the I.B. Dent Scholarship; and David McCall, the Ernest Borgnine Scholarship.

Awards are based on various criteria including acting experience, desire of training, local residency and audition performance. The scholarships, provided by donors and Barter Theatre alums, help to subsidize some of the costs of training and work done by The Barter Players. These young professional actors are crafting their skills in the professional residential theatre in Southwest Virginia and on tour on the East Coast.

The Barter Players do it all ? acting, building sets, costumes and props, changing sets up to three times a day, laundry, touring, teaching workshops, putting posters up around town, running lights or sound, and most of all, growing. Many Barter Players continue their careers in the Barter Theatre resident acting company or go on to have careers in theatres around the world.
