• CLOSING MARCH 21: The sculpture and ceramics of John Utgaard are on exhibit at McGlothlin Center for the Arts, Emory & Henry College, Emory, Va. Kentucky artist Utgaard creates colorful and inventive sculptures explore geological and biological ideas from his vivid dreams. He describes the sculptural objects as geological, biological and psychological relics, as if his mind were the site of an excavation. The artworks are often large in scale and built with a sense of precision and elegant unity between form and surface. The exhibition also features examples of Utgaard’s new ceramic pottery. He desires his pots to fit into users’ lives with a sense of humility and ease of use, but also with the mystery, wonder, humor and serendipity that handmade functional ceramics can uniquely attain.
