Bristol celebrates Juneteenth

The Bristol Juneteenth Celebration Committee is announces the annual Juneteenth Celebration, a commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Scheduled for Saturday, June 15, from 2-7 p.m.,in Cumberland Square Park, Bristol, Virginia, the event is a day filled with enrichment, entertainment, food and fun. Free and open to the public.

Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, marks the occasion when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, June 19, 1865, to announce the end of slavery, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Since then, Juneteenth has evolved into a symbolic day of remembrance and celebration of African American freedom and achievement.

The celebration featuresan array of activities and attractions for all ages, including:

  • Live Performances: Enjoy a live reggae band, gospel, saxophonist, stand-up poetry and other local entertainment
  • Food and Vendors: Free food and multiple vendors
  • Community Engagement: Engage with local organizations and community members
  • Family-Friendly Activities: Bring the whole family for a day of fun with a Bounce House for the children and other activities

The Juneteenth Celebration aims to foster a sense of community, promote cultural understanding, and honor the legacy of those who fought for freedom and equality. All members of the community are invited to join in this celebration.
