Jason Flack's Paintings Displayed at Johnson City Public Library

September 12 – October 13, 2023

Johnson City Public Library is hosting “Making Noise in Color,” an exhibit by Johnson City artist Jason Flack. Flack’s urban folk paintings are displayed in the library’s Galleria until Friday, Oct. 13.

On Thursday, Sept. 28 from 6-8 p.m., the library holds an artist reception for Flack. The public is invited to the Galleria to meet Flack, hear about his artistic journey and view his bold, vibrant paintings. Several of the works are on display for the first time.

An artist from a young age, Flack didn’t begin painting until 2010 after a series of tragic events, including the death of his twin sister, Jessica. After opening an old paint set that a friend’s mother gave him, Flack was immediately hooked. He found that in painting he could, as he put it, “use tragedy as fuel” for creative action.

Flack has been creating striking images ever since. His signature style–bright colors and strong black outlines–has remained consistent throughout his painting career. However, his subjects and focus have shifted over time.

He said, “As the years passed, I started to move away from just painting subjects I was comfortable with and started to move toward capturing emotions in my work–basically becoming more daring.”

“Creative confidence is so necessary to have, but it takes time and effort to cultivate and put into action,” Flack said. Flack’s work exhibits this kind of creative daring and energy, and it gives voice to an unapologetic exploration of racial and cultural issues.

As Flack put it, “In my work now, I hold a mirror up to society and just ask questions.”
