New exhibit opens at Fischman

Artists and students associated with ETSU’s Department of Art & Design will display works at the Fischman Gallery during the month of March. “Metalsmithing: Formed and Fabricated” opens First Friday, March 6, with an artists' receptionfrom 6:30-9 p.m. Metalsmithing is a field traditionally associated with fine craft that spans a multitude of processes and techniques. This exhibit features jewelry, small sculpture, functional objectsand wearable art. Materials such as copper, silver, brass, bronzeand steel are used to reflect the creativity and achievement of artists, from beginner to professional. Participants include local residents, former and current studentsand art faculty.

Professor Mindy Herrin-Lewis invited students and local artists to participate in this group exhibition. Herrin-Lewis is a figurative artist, metalsmith, and faculty member at East Tennessee State University. She teaches all levels of metalsmithing courses as well as figure sculpture and figure drawing. Herrin’s work combines precious metals with porcelain and explores themes such as growth, disease, preservationand fertility. Mindy Herrin-Lewis lives and works in Johnson City, Tennessee.

“Metalsmithing: Formed and Fabricated” runs March 6-29, 2026, at Fischman Gallery, 133 N Commerce St, Johnson City.The exhibit is free and open to the public, and the entrance is accessible.
