NORTON, VA. — Virginia Opera’s “Oh Freedom!” is a musical production honoring the history of African Americans from slavery through the struggles and successes of the Civil Rights Movement to date. “Oh Freedom!” is performed Friday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m. at Park Avenue Theater in Norton.
The musical journey begins in Africa and follows a chronological path through the Middle Passage to songs of slavery to the Civil Rights movement and finally to the election of the first African-American President of the United States. Audiences learn about the role music played in the tumultuous transition from slavery to freedom. “Oh Freedom!” also highlights other African American musical contributions to forms such as opera and jazz, in addition to honoring the life and legacy of leaders in music, sports, science and civil rights as the arts come alive through this powerful presentation.
