True Art Showcase seeks entries

February 20–23, 2024 @ Southwest Virginia Museum

The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park holds its True Art Showcase and Children’s Contest from Friday, March 1, through Friday, March 22. The showcase, named for James True, the first curator of the museum,celebratesthe works of area artists.Artists are invited to celebrate Southwest Virginia with artwork that represents “Memories” and what memories mean to them.

The deadline for submitting art for the showcase is Friday, Feb. 23, by 4 p.m. Due to limited presentation space, limit submission to four pieces per artistand keepthe size to 12” x 16” or smaller. If you would like a participation formemaildoretha.cole@dcr.virginia.govor call 276-523-1322.A variety of mediums, such as drawings, photos, paintings,cross stitch and sculpturesare welcome, provided they fit the size requirements.

The showcase also includes a student art competition reflecting this year’s theme,“Memories.” The art competition is open to students in grades K-12,and entries should portray some aspect of memories. It could be visiting a quiet mountain lake, spending special time with family and friends, or remembering the day you got your first pet. Drawings, photos and paintings are welcome. Maximum size is 8” x 11” and smaller submissions are welcome. All entries should be accompanied by the student’s name, school name and grade. Judges consider entries in the following groupings: K-4, 5-8 and 9-12. All submissions should be received at the museumby Friday, Feb. 23.Winning entries will be on display in the museum fromMarch 1toMarch 22.Winners in each group will receive certificates at a reception held at the museum on Sunday, March 10, at 2 p.m. in the Victorian Parlor.
