• During the recent Virginia Highlands Festival in Abingdon, Capo's Music Store featured several area luthiers. Among them were Allen Hicks who makes mandolins in Nickelsville, and his son Larry who makes guitars in Castlewood.
• SEPT. 17-18: The fifth annual Appalachian Luthiers Showcase during Bristol's Rhythm and Roots Reunion will be held in a former shop beside the Paramount Center for the Arts on State Street. The instrument makers will discuss their craftsmanship and techniques. Examples of their handcrafted guitars, mandolins, dobros, lap steel guitars, and banjos will be on display on Saturday from 12 noon-6 p.m. and on Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Participants have included Will Parsons and Gerald Sheppard, among others. 423-652-1234
