Southern Appalachian Dance Collective presents 'The Nutcracker'

November 24, 2025

Southern Appalachian Dance Collective announces its first full-length production of “The Nutcracker,” featuring original choreography from Artistic Director Olivia Henly-Ratliff and Resident Choreographer Will Smith.

“The Nutcracker” follows Clara and her dashing Nutcracker Prince as they journey through a swirling snowstorm into the Land of Sweets, where they’re welcomed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and a cast of unforgettable characters. Set to Tchaikovsky’s beloved score, this holiday favorite features a cast of dancers from across the region, including guest appearances from Star City School of Ballet, Radford University’s Department of Dance and more.

This year’s production of “The Nutcracker” unites a cast of dancers and performers from across the region, bringing new magic to the beloved holiday tradition. Emilia Castonguay is the graceful Sugar Plum Fairy, joined by D’Arcy Morrell as Dew Drop and Claire Booher as the spirited Clara. Erik Morrell takes the stage as the brave Nutcracker, with Noah Provenzano as the noble Cavalier.

Featured soloists include Alex Gladis as Marzipan, Evelyn Sheppard as Spanish, Maddy Cressell as the elegant French Jardinière, Anna Blake Wright as Arabian Lead, Eran Castonguay as both the mysterious Drosselmeyer and Arabian Lead, and Will Smith as the commanding Rat King. Walden Baxter reigns as the regal Snow Queen, while members of Radford University’s Dance Department bring beauty and grandeur to the scenes of Snow and Flowers. Emory & Henry Theatre students add charm and character as Party Parents and mischievous Rats, and Star City Ballet students infuse vibrant energy as the Russian and Chinese variations. Together, this remarkable ensemble creates a celebration of dance, storytelling and holiday magic for audiences of all ages.

There are three public performances, two at Emory & Henry University’s McGlothlin Center for the Arts Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and the final performance at Abingdon High School Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. For more information or to book tickets, visit www.sadcdance.org/nutcracker.
