BIG STONE GAP, Va.-The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park hosts its July “Lunch on the Lawn” summer music series Friday, July 24, from 12 to 1 p.m., featuring The Hillbilly Hippies and the WiseJAMS Music Program.
The Hillbilly Hippies, a mountain string band from Wise County, are made up of four lifelong friends who love making music together. The group includes Dawn Bays on fiddle, Larry Mullins on guitar, Les Bailey on bass and Joey O’Quinn on banjo. Their setlist features old-time favorites, bluegrass classics and a few original pieces. Well known at local venues, the Hillbilly Hippies are passionate about keeping Appalachian musical traditions alive. The WiseJAMS Music Program also works to preserve regional heritage by offering low-cost after-school classes in fiddle, old-time banjo and guitar at the park.
Park staff and volunteers will have crafts and activities for children at each “Lunch on the Lawn” program.So, bring the whole family out, have some fun on the beautiful front lawn of the museum and enjoy an afternoon of home-grown music and entertainment on thelawn of the museum.
The “Lunch on the Lawn” event is free and open to the public. Participants may purchase a meal from the park for $10, which includes a grilled hamburger, chips, marinated vegetable salad, dessert and choice of drink. All meals must be pre-ordered by 4 p.m., Friday, July 17. Guests are also welcome to bring their own lunch.
