The Lincoln Theatre Celebrates Halloween With Costumes and Classic Film

October 25, 2025 @ The Lincoln Theatre

MARION, VA — The Lincoln Theatre hosts their community costume contest and fourth annual Dread Through The Decades Saturday, Oct 25.

Starting at 1p.m., The Lincoln Theatre has its Community Costume Contest. Entry is free, and all ages are welcome to join and strut their silly, scary, or creative costumes on their historic stage. Ribbons will be given out for a variety of categories, and the winners of the kids and adult sections will win 2026 Movie Passes.

“I have always loved Halloween and dressing up. I noticed there wasn’t a lot of encouragement for adults in the area to dress up, and after I learned about The Lincoln having a costume contest in the '50s and '60s, I knew I had to bring it back,” says Film Curator Katelin Aanerud.

The free film festival will start at 2p.m.with the German Expressionism classic "Nosferatu" (1922). Although The Lincoln Theatre opened in 1929, it still showed many silent films. The day continues with two Universal Monster movies. "The Invisible Man" (1933) starts at 3:45 p.m., while "Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein" (1948) will begin at 5 p.m.

“I started Dread Through The Decades in 2022 because not only do I love old horror movies, but I wanted to educate people on the history of the theater,” says Aanerud. “I do a lot of research to find the perfect movies to show, and I change it up every year.”

As it begins to grow darker and colder outside, the movies will get scarier. The Vincent Price classic "House on Haunted Hill" (1959) will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by "Carnival of Souls" (1962) at 7:45 p.m. The night will end with an Italian Giallo called "Deep Red" (1975) at 9p.m. Punch cards are available to those who stay for more than one film.

Snacks and prizes will be given out to those who celebrate spooky season at The Lincoln Theatre For more information about The Lincoln Theatre and event tickets, visit www.thelincoln.org or call (276)783-6092.
