Art and photography contests accepting entries

There's still time to enter the prestigious art and photography contests of the Virginia Highlands Festival, both for adults and for youth.

The annual Juried Fine Arts Show and Gallery is held at the Arts Depot during the run of the festival. The show is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, beginning Friday, July 28 until Sunday, Aug. 6. Entries are accepted at the Arts Depot Saturday, July 22 and Sunday, July 23 from 2–5 p.m.

The show offers more than $1,500 in cash prizes for work chosen by juror Robert Tynes, with one People's Choice prize to be voted on by the public. Tynes is a professor of art at UNC Asheville. He lectures Thursday, July 27, at 7 p.m. to present the awards and talk about why each work was chosen.

The annual Photography Competition and Exhibition is showcased at the William King Museum of Art during the run of the festival, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Entry categories include amateur, professional, altered images and youth. All entries should be mounted on foam core and should be no larger than 11 by 14 inches. Entry forms and complete details are on the website.

The work may be dropped off Saturday, July 15, or Sunday, July 16, from 1-5 p.m. in the basement of the William King Museum of Art. They may also be mailed to Virginia Highlands Festival, Attention: Photography Committee, P.O. Box 801, Abingdon, VA, 24212 and must be received no later than July 17.

There is a Youth Art Competition and Exhibition also being held at the William King Museum of Art. Young artists may drop off their submissions for the Youth Art Exhibit Sunday July 23 from 2-4 p.m. on the basement level of the museum. An opening reception is at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 30.
