Watauga Lake in the Fall by Gregory Johnson
A group of local photographers formed Eastman Camera Club, Kingsport, Tennessee, more than 60 years ago. It was a way to share their work, learn from each other and promote photography in the community. Throughout the years, it has grown into a thriving organization with a wide range of activities.
“People join our photo club to connect with others who share their passion for photography, to learn new skills and to find inspiration in the work of fellow photographers. It’s also a great way to get constructive feedback and encouragement while exploring different genres of photography. We are a friendly, inclusive group that values creativity, collaboration and the joy of capturing the world through a lens. Whether you’re new to photography or a seasoned pro, you’ll find a place to learn, share and grow here,” says Gregory Johnson, club president.
The club offers educational programs, workshops, guest speaker events, field trips and friendly competitions. It also provides a supportive environment to improve technical skills, explore creative ideas and stay motivated.
“We regularly organize exhibitions to showcase members’ work in local venues and community spaces. We also provide hands-on workshops on topics from basic camera settings to advanced editing techniques. We host regular competitions where members can submit their work for judging. We display the contest winners at the Toy Reid Recreational Center. These contests are a fun way to challenge ourselves creatively and learn from feedback,” Johnson says.
Membership is a mix of skill levels — roughly 60% hobbyists, 25% advanced amateurs and 15% professionals. Experienced members and educators often share their expertise through presentations, demonstrations, and mentoring. Many offer outside training events and conduct workshops.
Most members use digital cameras, although some enjoy working with film or incorporating phone photography into their creative process. The club encourages all forms of photography.
The annual membership fee is $10 and helps cover the cost of guest speakers, event space and club activities. Joining is simple — visit the Information Desk at the Toy Reid Recreational Center, and they can assist anyone interested in joining the club. New members are always welcome, no matter their experience level.
Members enjoy access to all meetings, competitions, exhibitions and workshops, as well as networking opportunities with fellow photographers. The club meets monthly, on the second Tuesday of each month, at the Toy Reid Recreational Center in Kingsport, Tennessee, with additional outings and special events scheduled throughout the year.
The club also has a library of photography books available at the front desk at the Eastman Employee Center. They also have cameras, lenses, lighting, flashes, accessories and tripods available for rental, with a one-month notice. There are also tutorials and tips available on their website.
