ETSU Wins Digital Media Awards

December 20, 2009

JOHNSON CITY, TN – Jodi Crabtree and Alex Cox, graduate students in the digital media concentration within East Tennessee State University's Department of Engineering Technology, Surveying, and Digital Media, won the award for "Research and Practical Application" in the Third Annual Student Showcase at the 2009 International Digital Media Arts Association (IDMAA) Conference.

Crabtree's project was entitled "Balancing Aesthetic Requirements for the Design of Mythical Combination Flying Creatures with Anatomical Correctness and Believability." Cox's entry was "Videogame Storytelling: The Viability of Narratives in Video Game Media."

This year's conference, held at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., afforded students the opportunity to present their graduate research projects at the showcase in November.

Among the seven institutions competing, two were selected for special recognition by the IDMAA board of directors. In addition to ETSU, the other winning college was Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif., for "Innovation."

The Student Showcase is intended to give digital media programs in universities and colleges a means of displaying student work selected by faculty in the participating institutions as being excellent examples of innovation, creativity, and exploration that pushes the boundaries of the discipline. Each year, IDMAA gives recognition to those institutions that, by the strength of their students' work, demonstrate program excellence.
