Morgan is an artist who also writes. Stints on the boards of directors of the Center for Arts Criticism in Minneapolis and Artvu Magazine in North Carolina bear evidence of this interest, as well as his custom of writing out artistic ideas for his own use. Like language, Morgan's visual expressions are abstract. His paintings are built up of impasto deposits of acrylic paint applied with squeegee and palette knife to canvas or paper. Pattern, applied with stencils or painted freehand, is central to his work. His paintings have been remarked upon for the thick, almost three-dimensional quality of their built-up paint layers. In contrast, his prints rely on elegance of line and the translucent glow of color inks on paper.
Morgan took his formal art training at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art, where he was awarded a scholarship that enabled him to travel in Europe and Africa. He continued his education at the Graduate School of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his MFA in 1977. Morgan has taught at the School of Art at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. Currently he is a professor in the Department of Art at the University of Minnesota.
