Marketing the Arts: Design & Marketing at Area Colleges

May 25, 2010

• In addition to founding Coburn Creative, Lee Coburn teaches website design at Emory & Henry College. We asked Coburn how the teaching of design and marketing crosses between Mass Communication and Art departments. He explained that "Mass Communications emphasizes how to create a message and deliver it. Visual Art/Design takes that message and plugs in visual elements that create that same message -- things that communicate a message without words. For example, to represent a certain time period, the art might include influences from that era. If a subject is scary, you might use jagged lines and hard edges."

Virginia Intermont College's photography and digital imaging department provides student interns to capture marketing photography for the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion festival and Bristol Motor Speedway. The college also has graphic design students who intern to produce marketing materials such as posters, brochures and T-shirts for community organizations and businesses. VI Art Professor Perry Johnson said these opportunities for collaboration offer students and clients something of great value: The client gets the energy and talent of the student while the student gains experience with design in a business context. Our students build more than lines on resumes -- they design real projects. Plus, having direct contact with the client and receiving feedback is invaluable."

East Tennessee State University's Graphic Design Workshop, founded in 1988 by Professor Wayne Dyer, allows students to have professional experience before joining the workforce by working with real clients on real assignments in account management, design and production. During a typical semester, students have worked on more than 50 client projects, including the design and layout of books, brochures, displays, flyers, logos, magazine and newspaper advertising, point-of-purchase displays, package designs, posters, slide presentations, web page design, animations, videos, and other forms of visual communication.
